99 PERCENT INVISIBLE

Our special features this month focus on the dichotomy of two materials- wood and concrete. Around the 1920s, concrete was seen as being the material that would change the world. Today it is the second-most consumed material on the planet after water and responsible for around 8-10% of total global C02 emissions. 99% Invisible's podcast 'The Smell of Concrete' explores the reasons why we should learn to cherish concrete buildings and save them from destruction, while the University of Cambridge's film 'Wooden Skyscrapers: Sustainable Homes of the Future' gives us an insight into how engineered timber, which sequesters carbon, could reshape the way we build in the future. We see how the reuse of obsolete shipping containers can be used to build housing in Barcelona, and how the latest pandemic forces us to review the way our cities and homes are designed...and much more. We hope you enjoy it!
